LAMONTE, Mo. – Stephen Muilenburg, of Sparta, picked up two feature wins Friday night at L A Raceway, while Mark Shirshekan, of Farmington, picked up his first career Winged Outlaw Warrior feature win.
Muilenburg began the evenings feature events driving his B Modified car to the winner’s circle, but the feature didn’t start that easy.
After not weighing in at the appropriate weight in tech after his heat, he was forced to start dead last.
With the completion of lap one, Muilenburg had picked off four cars already and moved into fifth by lap three. Jeremy Lile was leading the race with Billy Bentley hot on his bumper. Bentley looped his car on lap five and took his car to the pits calling it an evening.
Lile lead the field of cars on a slow restart that gave him an advantage over the battle between Muilenburg and Gary Lewis for second.
With three laps to the finish, Lile and Muilenburg made the battle personal and between them as they broke away from the field. Lile slipped up and his car drifted to the high side and Muilenburg drove right under him.
Muilenburg captured the feature win with Lile, Gary Lewis, Ernie Walker and Tyler Lewis rounding out the top finishes.
In the Pitts Homes of Warsaw A Modified feature, Donnie Fellers and Muilenburg started on the front row. As the green flag flew, Muilenburg took the lead with Aaron Marrant picking the same groove and followed suit.
Muilenburg continued to lead the field of cars around the tack with Arrant trying to find a way around him. Tim Setzer started tenth and was slowly picking cars off lap by lap to move him into fourth by the completion of lap six. Two laps later he took third. Luke Feeback moved into the battle for fifth place by lap eight.
After three cautions, Muilenburg continued to lead the field of cars with Marrant solidly sitting in second. Each restart from the cautions worked in Isaac Dotson favor as he moved through the pack ending in fourth with five laps to go.
Feeback pressured Fellers for fifth but each attempt was no good.
Muilenburg took his second feature win of the night with Marrant, Setzer, Dotson and Fellers in the top five.
Mark Shirshekan was one proud driver after picking up his first-ever WOW win. L A Raceway has been notorious for drivers picking up first career wins such as Jonathan Cornell and Gabe Maycock.
Polesitter Eric Todd jumped to the lead in the feature event with Jay Russell right behind him. With two laps complete, Shirshekan and Tyler Blank had pushed ahead of Russell and had Todd in their sights.
Shirshekan took the lead on lap five from Todd and Blank took second from Todd just one lap later. Out of nowhere, Martin came charging forward and had taken third from Todd. A caution came out for Jon Corbin who halted in turn three putting Martin back behind Todd.
Another yellow followed quickly after that when Haley Arnold spun out in turn one.
When racing resumed, Martin passed Todd with nine laps left in the feature event and worked his way into second just one lap later. The battle heated up between Todd and Blank for third as they switched positions many times. Caution once again flew over the field when Cody Baker rolled to a stop on the backstretch.
Shirshekan made the restart count as he hit the throttle to space himself from four-time WOW champion Martin. With four laps left, Todd took a solid lead over the fourth-place car of Blank.
Shirshekan sailed to the feature win with Martin and Todd in pursuit.
Russell and Curtis Boyer made last lap charges and took fourth and fifth away from Blank.
Several sprint car drivers were doing double duty Friday night running in both the 305 and 360 sprint car classes. Mitchell Moore, Tyler Utz and Haley Arnold stepped out of their 360 cars and into their 305 cars throughout the night.
Ryan Schlender earned the pole position in the Gill Signs/Specialty Sportswear 305 Sprints feature event. Wednesday night’s winner Matt Close sat to his right. After a rocky start, Schlender took the lead with Mitchell Moore and Close hot on his tail.
Timothy Wheeler moved into fourth after starting eighth by the completion of lap one and Bradley Roberts was sitting in fifth.
Roberts took fourth from Wheeler on lap five. Tyler Utz moved into fifth by lap seven.
It was smooth sailing to the finish as Schlender picked up his first feature win of the season at L A Raceway. Moore finished second with Close, Utz and Roberts taking top honors for the night.
Ted Welschmeyer and Sundance Keepper picked up where they left off Wednesday night. The two drivers battled hard for the feature wins with Keepper picking up his second in a row at L A.
Welschmeyer earned the pole position with Keepper to his outside. Both cars have been fast so it was up to the driver’s talents to earn the feature win.
Keepper got the lead coming out of turn two as Welschmeyer got too high in the turns. Eddie Barnes sat comfortably in third as the three-way battle for fourth was unfolding between Anthony Ward, Justin Metzner and Kevin Perkins.
Caution flew over the field as Chad Eckhoff launched himself off turn three catching quite a bit of air. He was fine and racing resumed.
Welschmeyer tried to use the restart to his advantage by diving under Keeper in the turns, but Keeper’s horsepower just walked him away from Welschmeyer in the backstretch.
Laps were slowly winding down due to three cautions. Welschmeyer wasn’t giving up the battle and as the white flag flew, he was trying all the real estate he could find to get around Keepper.
Keepper took the feature win with Welschmeyer, Perkins, Barnes and Metzner topping off the field of cars.
In the Jim’s Tire Service Hobby Stock, Luke Skidmore, of Green Ridge, once again showed his talents by taking his second feature win of the season.
Skidmore started on the pole with John Simpson to his right. Skidmore quickly took the lead with Simpson falling in behind with some bump encouragements here and there through the corners. Michael Tyler set firmly in third while watching the battle in front of him and trying to stay out of the battle behind him.
On lap 11, things got interesting as Michael Hudson got loose in turns three in four allowing the three-way battle for fourth to heat up.
Ronnie Livengood and Hudson bounced off each other in turn two of the final lap allowing Linvengood and Danny Crum to cross the finish line before Hudson.
Skidmore took the feature win with Simpson, Tyler, Livengood and Crum finishing in the top five.
L A Raceway invites you to join them next Friday night for the regular five classes hit the track to earn points toward being crown the season’s champion.
