LAMONTE, Mo. – L A Raceway had a successful season opener with Terry Schultz, of Sedalia; Colt Cheevers, of Macks Creek; Ted Welschmeyer, of Tebbets; Mitchell Moore, of Edgerton, Kan.; and Luke Skidmore, of Green Ridge, taking the trip to winner’s circle and claiming the first feature win of the season.
In the Pitts Homes of Warsaw A Modified feature, it took two starts to get the field of cars underway with another caution after the completion of lap two.
James McMillin took the lead with Jimmy Dowell and Terry Schultz hot on his tail. Schultz and Stephen Muilenburg battled back and forth for third while taking second from Dowell.
After completing 11 laps, the upset for McMillin happened while he was rim riding, got a little high and shot off the bank in top of turn four. He lost six positions giving Schultz the lead.
A couple more cautions bunched the field back up but Schultz continued to maintain the lead and charge to victory.
Schultz took the checkered with Muilenburg, Dowell, Donnie Fellers and James McMillin making a come back to finish in the top five.
In the Pitts Homes of Warsaw B Modified feature, Gary Lewis and Colt Cheevers were battling for the lead when Lewis got really high in turn two. His car was pulled over the berm and he regained control down the back stretch giving up two positions. Lewis picked off Darin Claxton one lap later to set comfortably in third.
Cheevers worked up a significant full straight away lead over second-place Ernie Walker. Cheevers took a big win over Walker, Lewis, Claxton and Ethan Mullins.
In the Xtreme Motors Street Stocks feature event, John Brooks was scheduled to start on the pole but opted to start at the tail of the field moving Kevin Perkins to the pole position. Ted Welschmeyer started on the outside of row one.
As the green flag flew, Welschmeyer and Perkins came out of turn two side by side, but Welschmeyer came up with the lead as they crossed the line completing lap one. Brooks had moved from tenth to fifth in just one lap and into third by the completion of another lap.
With five laps in the books, Brooks moved into second around Perkins and began to catch Welschmeyer who was leading comfortably. Brooks made several attempts to pass the leader in the final five laps of the race, but the unexpected happen. Just when Brooks had reeled Welschmeyer in and was going for the lead, Brooks’ car erupted into smoke as the white flag flew.
Welschmeyer picked up the feature win with Perkins, Justin Metzner, Jeremy Gordon and Martin Crabtree taking the top five honors.
Mitchell Moore drove his sprinter to victory lane in the Gill Signs/Specialty Sportswear 305 Sprint feature. Chris Coleman earned the polesitter position and Moore took the outside. As the green flag flew, the red flag followed when Randall Roberts got crossed up and went for a hard ride into the top of turn one.
As the race resumed, Matt McGarry caused two cautions collecting Lacy Harrison on the first one.
Coleman got a better start the next green setting him in second behind Moore. Coleman moved his sprinter high on the backstretch on lap three and took it directly to the pits moving Ryan Schlender into second.
Two more cautions came out over the field giving Schlender the break he was looking for so he could catch Moore, but Moore is great a changing up the single-file restarts to keep the field of cars guessing.
Tyler Utz made some last laps charges that moved him into a battle until the end with Schlender. With five laps left, he took second. Schlender was searching for some real estate that would move him faster around the track to move back into second. With two laps left, he found what he was looking for and took second back from Utz.
Moore took the checkered with Schlender, Utz, Wheeler and Close rounding out the top five.
In the Jim’s Service Hobby Stocks feature event, Michael Tyler started on the pole with Brian Murphy on the outside. With the green flag flying, Murphy quickly took the lead with Tyler, Luke Skidmore, Joey Arnold and Ronnie Livengood filing out in the top five.
Skidmore put the pedal to the metal and began tracking down Murphy with Tyler setting all alone in third. As laps winded down, the most interesting battle was for fourth between Arnold, Livengood and Michael Hudson.
As the white flag came out Skidmore picked up his driving skills and stayed on Murphy’s bumper. Skidmore took one last attempt to take the lead coming out of turn four and it was a drag race to the finish.
Skidmore beat Murphy to the line for the feature win. Arnold, Hudson and Livengood finished in the top five.
